Weekend Knowledge Dump- August 17th, 2012

Here are a few links to articles and videos I found interesting this week and want to share.  Some are intellectual.  Some are informative.  Some are just fun.  If you have some free time, check them out this weekend.

A Students Guide to Tactical Folding Knife Selection, Carry & Deployment

MDTS’ Chris Fry provides an excellent tutorial about selecting and using a folding knife for defensive purposes.

Paper Bag Targets

Don’t get ripped off by the shooting range that charges $3 a piece for silhouette targets!  This article shows you how to make them with paper grocery bags.  The other shoppers in the store will think you are “going green” when you request paper bags on your next shopping trip…only you will know the truth!

 Hydra-Lock

This looks like an excellent product for securing commercial doors.  If I worked in a school or office, i would probably get a couple of these for quick security in lockdowns for active shooter situations.

 Don’t Let Complacency Be Common Place

A good article about how an experienced shooter screwed up and shot himself…and how you can avoid doing the same.

Restraint in the Use of Deadly Force

Interesting article from the FBI on police officers exercising restraint in using deadly force. Stats from the article:

• 80% reported that “they had been assaulted at least once during their career” (the average was seven assaults in the line of duty), with 27% injured severely enough to require time off work;

• 96% said they had drawn their firearms “at least once each year…under threatening or critical circumstances”;

• 70% said they had been “involved in at least one situation where they legally could have discharged their firearm.” On average, each had experienced four such situations;

• Yet only 20% had actually fired their weapon in a critical incident
