Weekend Knowledge Dump- January 23, 2026

Knowledge to make your life better. If you have some free time, check out some of these links this weekend.

The Pros And Cons Of Red Dot Sights On Pistols » Concealed Carry Inc

For those of you considering the transition to red dots.

Are You Part of the EDC 1%? – The Armory Life

Only about 1% of gun owners seek advanced firearms training.  The author contrasts this number with the number of new golfers who take lessons.  I think an even better analogy is snow skiing.  Almost all new skiers take lessons.  Why don’t all new gun owners seek lessons in the same way?

The FBI Just Settled the 9mm vs .40 vs .45 Debate

Are you worried about your handgun’s “stopping power?” Watch this interview to understand the factors that truly matter with regards to “optimal” calibers for self defense.Bottom line up front. I spent more than a decade researching this issue and produced the largest handgun “stopping power” study published in the last 30 years. What did I learn?

Caliber and projectile choice are almost inconsequential when it comes to forcing violent criminals to stop their aggressive actions. If I was required to carry lead round nose or FMJ ball ammo for defensive purposes for the rest of my life, I simply wouldn’t care.

WHAT IF YOUR NEIGHBORHOOD IS ATTACKED BY AN ANGRY MOB?

This is a prescient article for those who are paying attention.  It takes us back five years to another point in time when violence was erupting in our neighborhoods.  Some folks have seemingly forgotten how bad that was.

The article mentions having good fire suppression gear as a necessity.  If you don’t have fire extinguishers in your house, read the same site’s BLAZING BATTLES: HOW TO CHOOSE THE RIGHT FIRE EXTINGUISHER.”

Unarmed But Still Dangerous – GUNS Magazine

Strategies for places you can’t be armed with a firearm.

The Ounce Pistol Review: Folding .22 LR Pocket Pistol

A unique pistol you probably haven’t seen before.

The Freezing Shotgun Test; What Shotgun Is Best When Frozen?

Considering that much of America will be experiencing some extremely cold weather this weekend, it might be useful to know which shotguns perform best when frozen.

Keep Your Wheels: 11 Tips to Avoid a Carjacking

car-jacking-tips-01Some quick tips to avoid being carjacked.

Stop ICE Raids Alert Network

My cop readers should probably bookmark this site and check it for your POV regularly. Most of the vehicles entered now are rental cars or have very tenuous connections (at best) to Federal law enforcement vehicles. People can submit vehicles for any reason they want to.

I wouldn’t want an unarmed family member driving a vehicle on this list.

TikTokkers urge users on dating apps like Grindr, Tinder to expose, dox ICE agents: ‘Get those d–k pics!’

Life is much better since I deleted all the dating apps off my phone about 6 months ago.

Those of you who work in law enforcement careers should pay extra attention to this issue.

Medical Multi-Tool: The Triangular Bandage – Swift | Silent | Deadly

A very good analogy for a handy piece of gear that can be used for multiple medical emergencies.  I use the North American Rescue version in my kits, but I’ll be checking out the Chinook in the future.

Upgrade Israeli Style Emergency Bandage, 8Pack 6 Inch Compression Bandage for Emergency Wound Dressing

Speaking of medical issues, it’s time to re-stock your Israeli bandages, Get the 6″ version for a little over $4 each. They usually cost more than 2x that price.

Understanding Ohio’s Weapon Laws – Part 15 – When Is Shooting Into a House a Crime?

Read about the unanticipated outcome of this defensive shooting.

NO, THE SKY AIN’T FALLING

A discussion of survival supplies you might not have considered.  In addition to the gas meter wrench, I don’t think it would hurt to have a fire hydrant wrench and a sillcock key either.  When the fire department stops showing up because they are no longer getting paid and the city water pumps don’t have electricity to operate, you may have to open the hydrants for an old fashioned “bucket brigade” for fire suppression.  You have buckets, right?

Airbnb guest removal highlights questions about firearms laws and short-term rentals

Something gun owners should consider before considering a short term rental.

The Bowie Knife: Why This American Classic Still Has an Edge

Some Bowie knife history for you. Interested in a bit of Bowie trivia? I’ve been reading a lot about Wyatt Earp and Doc Holiday lately. Did you know Doc always carried a Bowie Knife? He called it “The Hell Bitch” and would occasionally hide it suspended from a lanyard around his neck.  After all of my recent reading, I’m convinced Doc Holiday killed more men with his Bowie knife than he did with his firearms. It’s funny to see that history has focused on covering his role in the OK Corral gunfight, but virtually ignores his blade kills.

The Static Six Trio – A Test for Rifles – By Mike Boyle*

I post lots of pistol shooting drills on this page.  Here’s one for your rifle to shoot on your next range trip.

93 years ago, six officers were killed during a shootout in Republic area

Here’s one for my police history buffs. Most of us have heard of and researched the Onion Field incident, Newhall, the Norco bank robbery, the FBI Miami Gunfight, and the 1997 North Hollywood shootout.

All of those incidents changed how cops did business and contributed to the “officer survival” movement. If you haven’t researched these incidents, you have some work to do.
My question is: Why haven’t we heard of this shootout? It was responsible for the single largest loss of law enforcement personnel in the USA until 9/11.

Thanks to Michael de Bethencourt for posting the link.

De-Escalation: A Commonsense Approach

A useful article for my police readers.

Mas Ayoob’s thought son different semi-automatic platforms.

What’s happening in the suppressor world since the $200 charge for the tax stamp was abolished three weeks ago.

Would your young child know what to do if she saw what appeared to be a home invasion in progress?

Armed Lifestyle Magazine #23

I especially liked the interview with Stephen Williford and the article on AR-15 buffers.
