1-2-R-3 Shooting Drill

3-two-1-270x350

Here’s another fun shooting drill for you to try.  I got it from the late  Todd Green’s website.  It uses the special target (below) that can be downloaded and printed on normal copy paper.

Download (PDF, 9KB)

The drill is shot at five yards and has a seven second par time.

Load your pistol with three rounds.

– From the holster, draw and fire one shot at the 1″ square.

– Then fire two shots at the 2″ circle

– Reload

– Fire three shots at the 3″x5″ rectangle.

It’s an easy drill to set up and it doesn’t require too much ammo.  It tests some critical defensive handgun skills like drawing and reloading, but most importantly, teaches you how to transition between targets of different size.  You need to use a different sight picture and shot cadence with each target in order to make the par time.

I tried this one a few times with my police duty gun (Glock 21) out of my duty holster.  I found it incredibly challenging to make the times using a duty holster and full flap magazine pouches.  In fact at the five yard line, I only passed one run out of five!  That 1″ box is tough to hit when moving fast.  My times ranged from 6.6 seconds to 7.5 seconds, so I swallowed my pride and moved up to 10 feet.

At the 10 foot line, I did much better. Three passes out of five runs.  All my times were under seven seconds and only two misses.

This is a tough drill, but a good test.  Now I know where I need some work (first shot precision hits and reloads with the full flap pouch).  Give it a try.  I think you’ll like it.
