Shooting Drill- Bill Drill #2

I got this drill from Todd Green’s Pistol-Training.com site.  It was designed by Bill Wilson to update his classic “Bill Drill.”

The normal “Bill Drill” consists of drawing and firing six shots at the A-zone of an IPSC or USPSA Silhouette target from a distance of 20 feet.  It is a good judge of draw time and rapid fire recoil control.  Bill has updated his classic drill and created the “Bill Drill 2.”  Here’s what it requires:

There are five strings of fire, each for time:

  1. Draw and fire 1 shot.
  2. Draw and fire 2 shots.
  3. Draw and fire 3 shots.
  4. Draw and fire 4 shots.
  5. Draw and fire 5 shots.

Bill Wilson suggests a 10-second total score as a goal.  Add 1/2 second for each hit outside the A-zone.

I didn’t have any USPSA targets handy, so I used the printable A-zone below and pasted it onto a regular silhouette.

I ran this drill four times using my police duty gun (Glock 21) and duty holster (Safariland ALS).  My times were as follows:

Run One- 8.72- no misses= 8.72

Run Two- 8.19- 1 miss= 8.59

Run Three- 7.95- 1 miss= 8.44

Run Four- 7.48- 3 misses= 8.98

As much as I like the Bill Drill, it can turn into a “hose fest” pretty quickly.  I think variation two is a better drill for improving the drawstroke, time to first shot, and accuracy.  I will be including it in my training regimen often.  Give it a try!
