Weekend Knowledge Dump- March 6, 2026

Knowledge to make your life better. If you have some free time, check out some of these links this weekend.

Austin Terrorist Attack

Austin PD does a really good job releasing video/audio of officer involved shootings as soon as possible. Here is what they just released on Saturday night’s terrorist attack downtown.

Hit play on this video and let it continue to play to get the police dispatch audio, the officers’ body cams, and the 911 calls.

For my cop trainers…

Three officers shot the terrorist. The first body cam is a solo officer approaching from one angle and firing several shots.  The next bodycam is from the officers approaching from a 90-degree angle on a different street, around the corner from the other officer.

It appears that all three officers fired almost simultaneously. It doesn’t look like the group of two knew the other officer was in the fight (and vice-versa).
This may be an issue to train and remediate to prevent future blue on blue shootings. Great job from all involved.

Radio traffic from the initial cop reporting the first victim could have been better. He mumbled quite a bit, didn’t know his location, got the suspect vehicle color wrong, and wouldn’t stop talking. There were also three different officers who marked that they were in command (via ICS). Stuff to work on in future training sessions.

Shooting the Wrong Person

The current trend in “tactical” police shooting is firing rounds at an ever faster cadence.  While I don’t think it’s always the right answer, I’m fine with learning to shoot really fast.  You should also be training yourself to STOP SHOOTING quickly as well.  I would argue that practicing stopping shooting quickly is more important than taking .03 seconds off of your shot-to-shot split.  Very few people are training that skill.

Edge of Reality: What You Need to Know About Knife Defense

“Here’s the dirty little secret that martial artists and knife nerds don’t want you to know: you do not need to be skilled with a knife to do massive damage. What you need is intent.

Everyone with a knife has the potential to be deadly.

The mentality of someone willing to use a knife as opposed to a gun is stark. A firearm is primarily designed and intended as a distance weapon. The user is not required to touch the victim. With a knife, the user must be willing to run a piece of steel through skin and muscle and bone and tendon. This is someone comfortable with at least with the idea of—getting bloody and feeling the life leave another human. This is not required with any other weapon.

This is an incredibly important thing to remember when dealing with a knife attack or threat. The defender must be willing to meet such an attacker with comparable or superior aggression and intent.”
