Shooting Drill: 3-Target Transitions

Written by Greg Ellifritz

Here’s a simple and fun shooting drill from the folks at the Modern Service Weapons blog.  It requires three targets that are all partially obscured.  Set them up like the photo below:

From the article description:

Try these simple strings of fire, all from the holster:

  1. 1 on each target, Left-Right
  2. 1 on each target, Right-Left
  3. 1 on each target, Center-Left-Right or Center-Right-Left

“You should be driving your sights to the center of each available target area, and not fixating on the unavailable shaded or no-shoot areas adjoining them.  If you’re pushing hard enough, your cadence should speed up where you can, and slow down where you need to.”

I did this drill as my first shooting session after two weeks off while I was traveling.  I did the drill as described at 20 feet and then added the following:

– Repeated drill with 2 shots on each target

– Repeated drill with 3 shots on each target

– Repeated drill 1, 2, and 3 shots right handed only from the holster with right hand only reloads when magazines ran dry

– Repeated drill 1, 2, and 3 shots left handed only from the ready position with left hand only reloads when magazines ran dry

-Every time I ran completely through all 3 of my carry magazines, I transitioned to my backup gun (that day it was a Kahr PM-9 in an Alessi ankle holster) and finished the stage I was working.

The drill ended up being slightly more than 150 rounds with my primary gun (Glock 19) and about 30 rounds from my Kahr PM-9.  It was quick, fun, and somewhat challenging without being drudgery….the perfect re-introduction after a couple weeks off!

Give it a try and post in the comments if you have any problems!
