Weekend Knowledge Dump- July 26, 2013

Here are a few links to articles and videos I found interesting this week. Some are intellectual. Some are informative. Some are just fun. If you have some free time, check them out this weekend.

DPx DANGER TAB

DPX-DANGER-TAB-BROKEN

This is a very slick little low profile emergency weapon.  I ordered some and tried them out.  The blades are definitely not shaving sharp.  They will cut, but it will take a long time to get through something thick.  I would have liked a sharper option, but it serves a role that no other escape tool can fill right now.

Positive Control

“The conclusion? Someday, technology and the knowledge of how to use it will become so dangerous that education would become a controlled substance.”

John Robb has some very enlightening ideas about societal evolution.  If you are interested in reading more, I recommend his book Brave New War.

Ready or not for reloads…

Jeff Gonzales writes about a strange malfunction that was caused by reloaded ammunition.  This one isn’t common, but it does happen.  I most recently saw it in a Russian machine gun (shooting Chinese surplus ammo) in Cambodia.  If multiple cartridges won’t chamber after a malfunction, stop.  You likely have an obstruction in the barrel.

And speaking of malfunctions, here is a report from a police department concerning a catastrophic malfunction in an AR-15 rifle.  The bullet was pushed back into the cartridge case enough to cause excessive pressures.  Check your ammo!

Why are cops so easy to hate?  Here is one police attorney’s answer…

The 1911 For LE and Special Team Use

Dr. Gary Roberts writes and excellent piece about using the 1911 for military and police tactical teams.  His bottom line:

“Most organizations and agencies requiring a .45 Auto handgun are clearly better served by a less expensive, more easily serviced modern pistol like the S&W M&P45, HK45, or G21.”

Todd Green agrees.

Multi-use antibiotic for stockpiling: azithromycin

A very informative article about how to use the antibiotic Azithromycin in a survival situation.  It isn’t mentioned here, but Azithromycin is the antibiotic of choice for treating traveler’s diarrhea in SE Asia where the bacteria is resistant to Cipro.

Some People Shouldn’t Own Guns….

It might anger a few of my gun rights advocate friends, but this guy is absolutely correct.  Some people shouldn’t own guns.  He also stated the major problem with his opinion….that there’s no way to weed those people out without infringing on the rights of others.

Your Lifestyle Has Already Been Designed

“The ultimate tool for corporations to sustain a culture of this sort is to develop the 40-hour workweek as the normal lifestyle. Under these working conditions people have to build a life in the evenings and on weekends. This arrangement makes us naturally more inclined to spend heavily on entertainment and conveniences because our free time is so scarce.”
