Weekend Knowledge Dump- April 5, 2013

Here are a few links to articles and videos I found interesting this week and want to share.  Some are intellectual.  Some are informative.  Some are just fun.  If you have some free time, check them out this weekend.

Soft Tissue Work for Tough Guys

If you aren’t using a foam roller or lacrosse ball regularly, you are missing out.  I roll before every workout and I really think it helps to keep me injury-free.  Here’s how to get started.  I like the Rumble Roller much better than the standard foam roller.

Carry Often, Carry More Than A Gun

Some other equipment you should be carrying in addition to your pistol…

1/7 Twist and light bullets. The Myth Debunked

003-6

We know that shooting heavy or long bullets in a slow twist (1:12) AR-style rifle will cause key-holing and a dramatic loss of accuracy.  The conventional wisdom of doing the opposite (shooting light bullets in a fast twist rifle) would cause similar results.  The folks at Loose Rounds disagree and have the target to prove it.  I really think there is a lot of individual variability between guns.  I’ve seen lots of guns that were able to shoot bullets they shouldn’t have been able to shoot.  My best advice is to buy a box and try it for yourself.

Your Fat Has a Brain. Seriously. And It’s Trying to Kill You.

A nice article about the “brain” in both fat and muscle.  The bottom line: “Skeletal muscle is the organ that counteracts fat.”

How do the different elements of a warm-up affect jump performance?

Back-issues-widgetIf you are still doing static stretching in your warm up, STOP IT!  Here’s yet another piece of research showing performance decline after static stretching.  Save it for AFTER the workout!

My friend and fellow instructor Craig Douglas explaining some of the finer points of using Brazilian Jiujitsu for gunfighting.  Craig teaches the single best extreme close quarters gunfighting class in the world.  Check him out at Shivworks.com.

Chris Fry from MDTS writes an excellent article on the optimal way to position defensive tools on your belt.

But the .22 Has Killed…..

Ellifritz_Failure_to_Incap_zps45f10409

Has the .22 killed more people than any other cartridge? John that takes a look at the real numbers. Despite his quoting of a rather dubious “expert”, the article is great and worth your time to read!
