Weekend Knowledge Dump- September 14th, 2012

Here are a few links to articles and videos I found interesting this week and want to share.  Some are intellectual.  Some are informative.  Some are just fun.  If you have some free time, check them out this weekend.

 AR GAS KEY STAKING

One of the most common functioning problems I see with the  AR-15 is caused by a loose carrier key. Check yours and make sure it is tight. You can stake it by hand, but the tool in the article (or a similar one from Brownells) makes the job much easier

FEMA’s Top 12 Emergency Items Analyzed by The Survival Mom

Good commentary about FEMA’s list of “must-have” disaster preparation supplies.

Gun Centric Much??

Melody talks about one of the biggest problems in the firearms training world. “When all you have is a hammer, every problem looks like a nail.”

Debunking the cholesterol myth and cultivating true heart health

A very succinct summary of why a high cholesterol level does not cause heart disease.

“The tragedy is that by putting all our attention on cholesterol, we’ve ignored the real causes of heart disease: inflammation, oxidation, stress, and sugar. Things we can actually control with foods, supplements and lifestyle changes – none of which have the costs or side effects of pharmaceutical drugs.”

How much Cash Should I have?

Some good advice here from a man who lived through his country’s economic collapse.  I don’t think most folks have enough cash stashed away where it is easily accessible.  Make sure you aren’t the one starving when the lights go out and your ATM/Credit Card stops working.

Using iPads before bed ‘can lead to a poor night’s sleep’

Blue light from any electronic source (Computer, Kindle Fire, IPad, TV) will interfere with sleep quality.  The best thing you can do is avoid any screens for at least one hour before bed and sleep in a pitch black bedroom.  You will be amazed at how much better you will sleep.  Read: Lights Out: Sleep, Sugar, and Survival if you want to learn more about how to sleep better.
