Weekend Knowledge Dump- March 28, 2025

Knowledge to make your life better. If you have some free time, check out some of these links this weekend.

Ayoob: Is Your Trigger Finger Placement Wrong?

Even if you have been shooting for a long time, I would encourage you to spend some time playing with different trigger finger positions.  You might be surprised which works best for you.

Backup Guns: Are They Necessary?

Some things to ponder.  As a cop, I never worked a single shift without carrying a backup handgun.  Now that I’m retired, it is exceptionally rare to find me carrying more than one gun.

Dirty Cans

Tips for cleaning all your different suppressors.

Old-School Revolver Training

An entertaining and informative discussion about how firearms training was different back in the days when everyone carried a revolver as a primary sidearm.  As we discuss history, you might also like this interview reviewing some major law enforcement gunfights that have permanently altered equipment and tactical considerations.

How Do I Use a Handheld Flashlight and Handgun at The Same Time?

The author of this article demonstrates some common flashlight shooting positions.  Unfortunately, that’s where most folks’ education ends.  It’s great to be able to shoot using a flashlight, but being able to search with a flashlight and a gun is a decidedly different skill set and one that requires a lot more than an internet article to teach.  I would urge you to take a low light class with a recognized instructor.

For some additional information about handgun/light usage, watch Steve Fisher’s video.

Training for Untrained Performance?

“If we want things to happen in gunfights, then we need to build the brain circuits that will make them happen with our training processes.  Anything else is literally a waste of time and resources.”

How Seasons Shape Crime: 4 Key Insights for 2025

Have you ever thought about the fact that crimes are seasonal?  We are close to entering the annual “riot season.”  Read Concealed Carry Corner: How To Deal With Crowds.

Prepping For Apartment Dwellers

Michael Janich has some preparedness tips for apartment dwellers.

Converting S&W J-Frame Combat Grips to Boot Grips

If you have large hands and like to shoot small revolvers, this modification might be useful for you.

As we are discussing gun modifications, there are definitely some modifications that you should NOT make with a defensive firearm.

The Cookie Tin … of Doom.

Just last night, I armed a friend who had flown into my town with just a carry-on bag and no weapons. It would have been way cooler if I had handed him a “cookie tin of doom.”

Train Like a S.E.A.L. (Safe Effective Ammoless Learning)

Dry-Fire-5Lots of ideas here for those of you looking to spice up your dry fire routines.

In Praise of Duplexed AR-15 Magazines

An improvised AR-15 magazine coupler that you all might find useful.  If you get a chance, you should also check out the author’s amazing dystopian survival fiction collection.

How to Travel the World on $75 a Day: Travel Cheaper, Longer, Smarter

What I’m reading…

Home Invasion: the Coker Family Incident

Massad Ayoob details an account of a worst case scenario home invasion that involved three attackers, two defenders, at least three guns being fired, life threatening physical attacks on both victims, a heart shot that didn’t work, a head shot that didn’t penetrate, and a partner rescue scenario where the severely injured wife had to shoot the bad guy while her husband was holding him in a headlock.

The more of theses scenarios I read about and experience at work, the more I recognize the value of training to stay calm in absolutely chaotic situations. All the shooting training in the world wouldn’t prepare most people for this event. An attack like this requires adaptability and transcendence of chaos more than any single skill set.

‘Attempted Murder:’ 15+ Conservatives Targeted by Swatting Attacks in 1 Week

Have you seen the news about all these “swatting” calls?  If you are politically conservative, high profile, and post a lot on X (Twitter), you should be paying attention.  Keep your doors locked.  Use external video surveillance to differentiate between cops and thugs.  Be extra cautious and contact the police if you get several “mistaken” pizza deliveries.  Read the article to see how these criminals are trying to get you killed.

Recent History of Small Arms Cartridges: Featuring Kirk W!

A fascinating discussion of firearms cartridge development and nomenclature.  I geek out on this stuff for a living and still learned a lot from Kirk’s presentation.

Lessons Learned As A Professional Instructor

All of my readers who teach either full time or part time will find this article to be very valuable.

You think you can multitask? Think again!

“Certainly, you can multitask, but if you think you can do it effectively, it’s time to reconsider. Research has shown that not only are people more prone to error when they attempt to multitask, they overestimate their ability to do it effectively (one example of “egocentric bias”).”

Is There A Major Ammo Shortage Coming?

How long have I been telling you folks to stock up?  Read this article for more information.

How To Wield the Shockwave Effectively

I personally don’t like stockless shotguns for most applications.  If you own one and want to use it effectively, you should practice the techniques discussed in this article.

Modern OPSEC and Thirdworldization

Standing out in the crowd may not be the smartest plan in today’s volatile political environment.
