Weekend Knowledge Dump- March 28, 2014

Here are a few links to articles and videos I found interesting this week. Some are intellectual. Some are informative. Some are just fun. If you have some free time, check them out this weekend.

Reviving a Life Saver, the Tourniquet

21TOUR-master675

Tourniquets are the best way of controlling serious bleeding.  If you carry a gun for self protection, you also need a tourniquet and the knowledge about how/when to use it.  My favorite tourniquet is the SOF-T Wide.

Guide to Shotgun Shell Types

ShotgunAmmo

A basic primer about the different types of shotgun shells and the payload contained in each.  For self defense, I think the current best option is the Federal #1 Buck with flight control wad.  If you can’t find that one, any of the full-power eight-pellet 00 Buck loads will work almost as effectively.

Plates Work Better Than Kettlebells

plate-swing

Kettlebells are expensive.  You can use weight plates as a substitute for them in many situations.  I’d much rather see people using 25lb weight plates than those pink 10 lb. kettlebells you can buy at WalMart.

A Reliable Compact 1911

A Reliable Compact 1911 by Bill Wilson 2014-02-27 09-58-18

I’m not much of a 1911 guy and am even less enamored with the compact 1911s.  I just see too many of them stop running in my training classes to consider them reliable.  If you do want to carry a chopped 1911, Bill Wilson explains the necessary modifications to make it shoot reliably.

Looking For Nails

wrong tool

Melody knocks it out of the park with this article.  I see way too many students who can run a five second “El Presidente”, but can’t fight their way out of a wet paper bag.  Even worse, they lack the social skills to verbally discourage any type of attack.  For them, every problem is a “gun problem.”  Don’t be like them.  If you are serious about this business, you should spend as much time studying social psychology, de-escalation techniques, and criminology as you spend shooting your guns.

The .22 LR Pistol and You

22 Beretta Bobcat

The .22 for self defense?  Here are a few justifications you may not have considered…

The two questions your defensive shooting instructor should be willing and able to answer.

How would your instructors answer these questions?

One of one is none

20140228-090438-230x160

Jeff Gonzales injects some rational thought into the “how much junk should I carry?” debate.

Rape culture and the delusions of the feminist mind

university

Have you heard that one in every four female college students is raped?  Not true.  Don’t believe the hype.

My Personal Path Away From The 1911

20130320-SA-TRP-Op-IMG_1315-600x450

When a gunsmith and trainer who made his name working on 1911 pistols says he’s getting away from them, you should pay attention.

 PCP Polymer Ammo Warning

Maybe the polymer cased rifle ammo isn’t the best idea after all….
