Weekend Knowledge Dump- November 29, 2013

Here are a few links to articles and videos I found interesting this week. Some are intellectual. Some are informative. Some are just fun. If you have some free time, check them out this weekend.

The Truth About Barrel Length, Muzzle Velocity and Accuracy

540.ttag_

A very good study showing how cutting down a barrel affects accuracy and velocity.  It really doesn’t matter all that much.  Even with my precision rifles, I prefer a shorter barrel.  Using a 26″ barreled “sniper” rifle in one of my sniper schools was exceedingly difficult in any position other than prone.  I quickly replaced it with a shorter barreled rifle.  It is just as accurate and much easier to fire from alternate positions.

AR-15 Muzzle Brake/Flash Hider Comparison

spl1meter-1024x386

A comparison of sound output from various flash hiders and muzzle brakes.  The muzzle brakes/compensators on an AR-15 roughly DOUBLE the noise of the shot.  They also annoy the hell out of anyone on the line with you.  Stick with the flash hiders.  Besides, his earlier test showed significantly greater muzzle flash with the compensators as well.

An Urban Operator’s First IDPA Match

IDPA_Shooters

One of the funniest things I’ve read in a long time!  If you have ever shot in competition or been to a firearms training class, you will know this guy.  It’s just as funny when the same guy takes on a 3-gun match.

How To Make A Super Secret Safe

A cool idea for safely hiding small items in your home. It’s a good idea to have a month’s worth of cash at home in case of economic troubles or natural disasters. This would be a good place to keep it if you are concerned about theft.

Fit for the Fight

A very in-depth article by the Mountain Guerrilla about creating a fitness program designed for combat.

Chasing the Fad

I echo the author’s opinion on gripping the rifle and about co-witnessing sights.  Don’t blindly follow the cool trends.  Figure out what works for YOU!

How to Use Your Smartphone As an Essential Part of Your Disaster Kit

Good article highlighting some apps you may not have considered.

Winchester Ranger 147 grain 9mm Problems

Download (PDF, Unknown)

I generally like the Winchester Ranger load and I carry the 127 gain Ranger in my 9mm pistols, but it appears that ICE has found some problems and is replacing the Ranger with Gold Dot.
