Weekend Knowledge Dump- February 1, 2013

Here are a few links to articles and videos I found interesting this week and want to share.  Some are intellectual.  Some are informative.  Some are just fun.  If you have some free time, check them out this weekend.

FBI focuses firearms training on close-quarters combat

A step in the right direction here. 75% of FBI gunfights are fought within 3 yards. As the article says…3-4 fast hits inside of 10 feet is what is needed to win the average gunfight. What percentage of your training addresses this problem?

My Thoughts on Low Carb and Paleo, Part Deux

Robb Wolf’s bottom line on low-carb diets. If you haven’t read Robb’s nutritional work, you are missing out. I truly believe that he is one of the brightest minds in the dietary research field. Do yourself a favor and pick up his book called The Paleo Solution.

Christmas terror attack foiled in Russia

Future terrorist attacks in the United States aren’t going to be a bunch of people flying airplanes into buildings.  The future here is most likely to be a combination bombing and active shooter event.  Think about Mumbai India.  That type of attack will increase in frequency in the USA during the coming years.  Look at the link to see an example.  Terrorists were targeting a church service on Christmas Eve.  They planned on using both bombs and guns.

If you are interested in self protection and the combative arts, you really need to get up to speed on bombs.  They are likely to be a significant element in all future terrorist attacks, especially if more gun control legislation is enacted.  If you want a quick familiarization reference, check out this article.

 Something useful from Doomsday Preppers

Here’s a brilliant idea for quickly barricading the windows in your home.  It is much faster than the traditional method of screwing the plywood into studs every 12 inches.  The developer claims he can barricade his whole house in 30 minutes.

Knife Legal Defense Issues Deserve Study

A very informative interview of a 20-year veteran public defender’s office investigator.  He discusses knife self defense, they types of attacks, the types of injuries, and who gets convicted.

THE M4 BOLT: GAS RINGS

If you own an AR-15, you need to read this article.  It discusses everything you will ever need to know with regards to the bolt, bolt carrier, and gas rings.  Pay attention!  I’ve been to three different AR-15 armorers’ schools and I still learned a couple things.

How To Use Fish-Mox (to treat your sick fish, of course)

Veterinary  antibiotics (as long as they are pharmaceutical grade) are the exact same pills that you would get if you had a prescription filled at your local pharmacy.  In most cases they are even made by the same companies as those that make human drugs.  Veterinary antibiotics are legal to possess and can be ordered over the internet.  It’s funny that all those “veterinary” pills are sold in human dosages!

Doc Bones (a real doctor) explains how to use Amoxicillin (or Fish-Mox)in a situation when you can’t get to a doctor.  He also identified a new website selling all of the animal antibiotics as cheap as I’ve see them online.  I haven’t ordered from them, but their prices are certainly competitive.  If you are concerned about access to health care in the future, it might be wise to pick up a few bottles for long term storage.

EDC Concepts & Considerations

Chris Fry from MDTS put up a great video about things to consider when choosing your everyday carry defensive gear.  Chris has this stuff figured out.  Listen to what he has to say.

Confessions of Preparedness Junkies

The preparedness junkies did a great review of the “System Collapse” medical class I taught last weekend.  Thanks David!  If anyone is interested in scheduling a class like this for your group or family, please contact me and we’ll set something up!
