Weekend Knowledge Dump- August 16, 2013

Here are a few links to articles and videos I found interesting this week. Some are intellectual. Some are informative. Some are just fun. If you have some free time, check them out this weekend.

12 Stupid Things People Care Way Too Much About

I like #2- Celebrity and Sports Gossip

“These people directly affect your life in absolutely no way whatsoever. Your obsession and investment in them is worse than harmless entertainment, it is a way to live vicariously through the idealizations of who you wish you could be — if only you weren’t so afraid to get off the couch and actually do something. Yeah, there, I said it.”

Patrolling for Preparedness

flag

” ..the “average” prepper wants to focus on more mundane tasks like gardening, raising crops, and tinkering around the Doomstead, while wreaking havoc and despair on bulls-eye targets at 500 yards on the local gun club range.

The reality is, if you’re concerned about any sort of societal upheaval, and you’re not planning on security patrolling, you’re relying on local LEO to protect you. In which case, you might as well rely on the local government to feed you and shelter you as well.

The idea that you’re going to board up your windows and repel boarders with precision rifle fire at 500 meters is so absurd, I can almost not bring myself to comment on it anymore. Seriously, I don’t care if you’ve got your own overhead UAV coverage running 24/7/365, early warning electronic devices placed every 50 feet around your property, and the best pack of German trained Doberman security dogs that deutschmarks…err..Euros…can buy, bad people can get to you.

The only way you are going to effectively prevent someone from driving a tanker truck through your front gate, or fire-bombing your underground Bunker-of-Doom with Molotov Cocktails down the ventilation shafts, is through patrolling. You need human eyes and ears outside of the range of the expected enemy’s expected range capability, and the projection of force far enough out to make getting to you more expensive than anything they expect to find when they get to you.”

Meal Frequency

bio-150x150

Great information about how often you should eat. Eating six times a day is generally bad diet advice, despite what you have read in your favorite fitness magazine.

Podcast – Ballistic Radio Episode 18

Ballistic-wordpress-15

A very informative podcast from Massad Ayoob about many self defense related topics.  His advice on what one should say to the police after a self defense shooting is extremely important.

Be careful to whom you entrust your keys….

BallistiCrete

This may be a viable option for those looking to harden parts of their houses.

The Great Cholesterol Consensus, Pt. 1

cropped-coffee_beans

Learn how “the greatest scam in the history of medicine” has been foisted on you…and why I’m not worried about my heart health even though I eat a pound of bacon every day for breakfast.

How To Reload The AR-15 Rifle

From the Vuurwapen Blog, a good way to speed reload an AR-15 rifle.  There is a lot of hype out there in the interwebs, but this method is both sensible and well thought out.  I personally prefer to strip the old mag (in the same way I strip a pistol mag) and I like to give the new mag a tug to ensure it’s seated.  With the P-Mags, it isn’t as likely to be important, but if you are putting a full metal mag into a rifle with a closed bolt, the tug is important.
