Weekend Knowledge Dump- July 20, 2012

Here are a few links to articles and videos I found interesting this week and want to share.  Some are intellectual.  Some are informative.  Some are just fun.  If you have some free time, check them out this weekend.

 Snub Training (2012) – Smith & Wesson K-frames

Michael de Bethencourt is releasing his newly written book on snub revolvers page by page on his website. He is one of the few snub authorities and I look forward to seeing his book in completion.

These are his thoughts on the K-Frame snubs….without a doubt, my favorite. I have several 2″ model 10s, two 2″ model 12s and two Colt Cobras. The Cobras are certainly a bit smaller, but the 2″ Model 12 from Smith is what I like the best. Don’t overlook these guns for home defense!

Speedloaders – Michael deBethencourt

And since we are on the topic of revolvers, check out this video (also from Michael de Bethencourt).  He covers all of the models of speedloaders available, the pros and cons of each type, and how to use them most effectively.

Should You Tell?

An excellent blog post regarding disclosure of your CCW status.  Who should you tell that you are carrying a gun?  In my experience, I don’t tell anyone unless they ask or unless they need to know for some vital tactical reason.  And if someone asks, I generally won’t tell them the truth (that I carry a gun every waking moment) unless I am sure they can maturely handle such knowledge.  If I think my disclosure will cause problems or negative reactions, I lie.

American Combato Book Reviews

Bradley Steiner ( a martial artist and very successful author) teaches a unique style of combative fighting relying on the simple yet devastating techniques that were developed during WWII to teach our soldiers.  He’s one of the few alive who still teach this system.  He also has a very comprehensive page (linked above) of book reviews of all the older self defense books that have been printed.  I’ve heard it said that “if you want to learn something new, find an old book.”  I think it’s good advice.  Start your search here.

10 Commandments of Concealed Carry

Massad Ayoob gives you all the important information to consider before you carry a concealed firearm.  If you carry I gun, you should pay attention to this advice!

 How To Drain An Abscess

Considering how common the affliction is, this is a good skill to know if you are ever in a situation where you don’t have access to medical care.  The authors of this article recently wrote a book on survival medicine: The Doom and Bloom Survival Medicine Handbook.  I’m reviewing it now and will write up a summary on my page in the near future.
