Weekend Knowledge Dump- October 18, 2024

Knowledge to make your life better. If you have some free time, check out some of these links this weekend.

With the upcoming presidential election, the current worldwide military conflicts, and the extensive damage done by recent storms, the USA is in a very turbulent place right now.  Until things calm down, I’m going to start each week’s knowledge dump with a few articles covering current events and how you can best avoid becoming a victim.

Check out the links below for some excellent advice related to our world’s crazy current events.

Are You A Handgun Combat Master?

Here’s a shooting drill you should try on your next range trip.  I actually trained with Chuck Taylor a couple times almost 25 years ago.  What new folks who never knew him don’t know is that Chuck refused to use a shot timer.  His drills were timed with a stopwatch.  If he liked you, your times were blazing fast and he invited you to take private training from him (for a handsome price) in order to get your “combat master” certificate.

An Official Journal Of The NRA | Trained Vs. Untrained

“The commitment to ongoing skill development is what separates the proficient shooter from the novice. In the end, training is not an option—it is a necessity and ultimately the path to mastery.”

Factory trigger pull weight comparisons for many of the world’s most common semi-automatic rifles.

The Shooter’s Bookshelf: Left Of Bang

I highly recommend reading Left of Bang.  The guys who developed the original program upon which this book was based also have a very good podcast.

PCCs and Defensive Ammo

Solid advice about selecting ammo for your defensive PCC.

The Underwear Gun (T.U.G.)

Mark talks about handy ways to carry guns around the house without having to wear belts of holsters.  I generally do the same thing when doing yard work using my S&W 43C or 351C revolvers equipped with a clipdraws.

NON-PERMISSIVE ENVIRONMENTS: Considerations for Carrying Guns In Places You Shouldn’t

An important analysis.  For my advice on the topic, read the article that has generated the single most amount of hate mail I’ve ever had in 20 years of public writing.

Concealed Carry Corner: Limitations Of Concealed Carry During Mass Shootings

Have you considered that you may not actually be able to engage the bad guy in an active killer event?  That’s why I wrote this article.  For many of you, escaping the scene while using your firearm to protect yourself and family during your exit will be the best option.

AAR – Thunderstick Summit 2024

Last weekend I taught a three-day shotgun seminar in Utah with some of the top defensive shotgunners in the world.  It was an amazing seminar.  Check out Frank’s AAR here.  The read Paul Martin’s review at AAR: Vang Comp Thunderstick Summit.

A Purse Snatching Thwarted In Maryland

Think about whether or not you’d get involved in a crime like this.  In today’s political environment, if the old woman wasn’t getting seriously hurt or killed, i wouldn’t even consider it.  If you are a “high responder” who would likely intervene, you should also read Here are some other things you might want to consider before you try to hold someone at gunpoint until police arrive.

Are Pistol Champs Alcoholics?

It’s stunning to me how attitudes on this topic have changed over the years.  In the 1950s it was commonplace to get drunk before marksmanship competitions.
