Weekend Knowledge Dump- March 15, 2013

Here are a few links to articles and videos I found interesting this week and want to share.  Some are intellectual.  Some are informative.  Some are just fun.  If you have some free time, check them out this weekend.

Analysis: Ohio’s magazine capacity limit

A brief but thorough explanation of Ohio’s confusing law that prohibits firearms with magazine capacities over 30 rounds.

The Survival Medicine Cabinet: Infections

An excellent list of antibiotics to have on hand if you anticipate a collapse in our current health care system…and their legal veterinary counterparts (identical to the pills you would get at a pharmacy) that you can order without a prescription.  The authors’ book The Doom and Bloom Survival Medicine Handbook is a great reference to have on hand as well.

Survival Medicine Cabinet: OTC Drugs

If you enjoyed the antibiotic article above, you will probably want to read the authors’ recommendations about OTC drugs as well.

Topical Ivermectin Lotion for Treating Head Lice

Speaking of survival medicine, have you considered that any collapse in the health care system will also likely coincide with a general reduction in cleanliness and hygiene standards?  Most of us have never had to deal with the problem of lice, but they will become more prevalent when sanitary practices decline.  Here’s how to treat head and body lice.

Top 11 Biggest Lies of Mainstream Nutrition

Some very important nutritional principles that most people still don’t understand….

Frank Hamer: Legendary Lawman

An informative article about one of our country’s most experienced gunfighters.  You’ve likely never heard of him, but Frank Hamer was a Texas Ranger who was involved in more than 50 gunfights in his career.  He commanded the group who killed Bonnie and Clyde.  There are lots of lessons to be learned from that nearly forgotten period of American history.  Study the tactics of Hamer, Rex Applegate, Charles Askins, Bill Jordan, and Jelly Bryce.  Their experiences can’t be matched in today’s world.

A good place to start if you are interested in Ranger Hamer is the book I’m Frank Hamer.  It’s out of print, but worth picking up if you can find a copy in your price range.  An alternate book is The Deadliest Men, which has a chapter on Hamer’s life.

15 Static Stretching Mistakes

Some things you haven’t considered in your stretching program…get ready for an anatomy lesson!

Solutions for the Everyday Carry of Duct Tape

Duct tape is a very useful item to have on hand for both survival situations and medical emergencies (bandaids, blister covers, improvised pressure dressings, sucking chest wounds).  Here are some neat ways to carry some everywhere you go.

Abuse of power or just the human side of authorities

One man’s experience in dealing with the police during the societal collapse that occurred in the Balkan wars.  From the article (English is not the author’s first language):

“Remember this: When SHTF, there are a guys with guns, and there are guys without guns. Everything else are just labels. Names like police, army, authority, government…

You can not think in the terms that we think today, it is dangerous.”
