Weekend Knowledge Dump- April 4, 2014

Here are a few links to articles and videos I found interesting this week. Some are intellectual. Some are informative. Some are just fun. If you have some free time, check them out this weekend.

It may cost you not to pay attention

Attempted-robbery-Springfield-MA

Matt Jacques shares some words of wisdom about situational awareness.

How to Hip Thrust

band-options

Most of us spend too much time in a seated position.  This leads to atrophied glute muscles.  Here is the single best way to fix them.

Self-protection/Self-perfection part 2; talking the talk

communication-model

Important concepts about communication skills.  This is an area where I see a lot of students needing some work….

Sharpen Your Red Dot

Aimpoint-Micro-575x380

A simple technique to use at long range if you notice your red dot is getting “fuzzy.”

Stripping Vs Dumping Magazines

magchangeupside

Be a stripper, not a dumper.

Competition Vs. The Tactical World part Tres

Sights21-600x417

I’m a big advocate of pressure testing firearms skills by using competition.  The competitive aspects can be taken too far of course, but I fail to see how learning how to shoot fast and accurately while under stress is a bad thing.

Want To Be Better Competitive Shooter?

MikeS08LimitedNats-150x150

If you agree with me (and the article above) you might as well be good if you are going to compete!  Here are 10 tips from Mike Seeklander to become a better competitive shooter.  His companion piece covering tips for defensive shooting is HERE.  If you want to read more, I highly recommend his books.

The Most Common Eye Injuries I See and What to Do About Them

Good information about eye injuries.

Is your child’s bug out bag going to hurt them?

rsz_youngpct20backpacker_4

How to fit your child’s bug out bag…

Winchester PDX1 .40 Ammo Test

IMG_5497_zpsb39f78c3Expands to .68 and penetrates 15″ after four layers of denim.  You can’t ask for much better performance than that in a pistol load.  If you carry a .40 autopistol, this would be an excellent self defense load.

The Julie Method Flashlight Technique

safe_image.php

A very good flashlight technique. The only weakness is that the light is generally focused at a slightly downward angle. At common defensive shooting distances, it won’t matter, but at extremely long range (maybe greater than 50′ depending on the shooter and light) you may not be able to adequately see the target.

Group Fitness Classes: Best Practices from the Experts

gym-best-practices

For any of you who do CrossFit or any other high intensity group fitness classes, does your gym follow these best practices?  The trainers here are some of the smartest minds in the industry.  Pay attention to what they have to say.

Septivium Begins

RISE

An intellectual examination of the author’s idea of the seven ways (Septivium) of becoming a polyspecialized modern renaissance man.  I like his explanation for the integration of “Becoming an Adventurer” with the other six ways.

“This is sort of the flip-side of the Survivalist material—if you use the other aspects of Septivium to make yourself very fit and capable, with layered defenses against multiple possible threats, you can go out into the world and take calculated risks.  The Adventurer is in a very real sense built on the other six.”

I’ve noticed a similar trend in both myself and a lot of other people I know…as they become highly skilled in the fighting arts. lifestyle design, and social dynamics, they feel much more comfortable taking calculated risks that others may choose to avoid.

Shatter a Car Window with a Sparkplug in an Emergency

I learned this trick from an old state trooper in the police academy almost 20 years ago.  He carried smashed up bits of spark plug in his uniform shirt pocket every day at work!

Ruger Issues Recall on Certain SR-556 Rifles

Screen-Shot-2013-08-14-at-1.03.23-PM-300x300

If you have a Ruger SR-556, check to see if it’s one being recalled.  Worn disconnectors cause bad things to happen!
