Author moving to the outside of a group of attackers to "stack them up". Fighting one person at a time is better than fighting all three at once

TweetDepending on the source of the research you read, you’ll find that about 40% of violent criminal attacks will involve you fighting more than one attacker.     Fighting one person is bad enough.  Fighting a group is exponentially worse.     Take a look at this video for a good example of a nasty [...]

Tweet   I know what you are thinking….who carries a revolver?  I do.  So do many other knowledgeable firearms instructors.  In a recent conversation with John Benner (founder of the Tactical Defense Institute), I learned that John relies on a revolver for his PRIMARY night-time home defense weapon!  That’s what is on his bedside table [...]

Author conducting fitness testing for police recruits

TweetAlmost every police administrator recognizes the inherent benefits that a physically fit police officer can bring to an agency.  Reduced absenteeism, greater productivity, fewer injuries, and a reduction in health care costs have all been correlated with a high level of physical fitness in police officers.  Despite these benefits, only one in three law enforcement [...]

TweetWritten by Greg Ellifritz   Now that almost every state allows its citizens to legally carry a concealed handgun, there has been an explosion of interest in .380 acp pocket pistols.  Many people who are new to carrying guns haven’t yet made the transition to “dressing around the gun”.  They want to wear the same [...]

Running my Glock 21 hard at one of Henk Iverson's classes. A rear frame rail broke off soon after the class. the whole gun was replaced by Glock. It only had 32,000 rounds through it.

Tweet    OK…let me get this out of the way right off the bat.  I carry a Glock pistol during about 95% of my waking hours.  My police duty gun is a Glock 21 in .45acp.  I back that up with a Glock 26 in 9mm.  The same Glock 26 or a Glock 19 in [...]

Tweet Overall, I think this is a great book. It provides excellent information without having the paranoid survivalist tone that some of its competitors have.   The book mostly deals with urban or suburban scenarios for families. Little wilderness or back country information is discussed. The author does cover a few scenarios that are more [...]

95% one-shot stops? Not hardly.

TweetIt is fitting to see this story on the eve of Col. Jeff Cooper’s birthday.  You see, Col. Cooper was a huge fan of the .45 handgun.  He once made the statement that the .45 ACP will instantly stop 19 out of 20 attackers.  While I greatly respect Col. Cooper’s contributions to the shooting world, [...]

Police Defensive Tactics Training- Are Officers Getting Enough?

8 May 2012

TweetAlthough much of the population views the police officer as proficient in all aspects of unarmed self-defense, practical experience proves otherwise.  Conversations with police officers will usually show that most officers receive little, if any, unarmed self-defense or defensive tactics training after their initial course of instruction in a basic police academy.  I believe that [...]
