Weekend Knowledge Dump- March 22, 2013

Here are a few links to articles and videos I found interesting this week and want to share.  Some are intellectual.  Some are informative.  Some are just fun.  If you have some free time, check them out this weekend.

Shoulder Pain: Taken Out by the Bum Wing

Great article about fixing shoulder pains!

Why You Shouldn’t Wear Camouflage

“The true meaning of camouflage is to disguise something in its environment. For a tree frog, that might mean looking like part of a tree. For a person interacting with other people, that means looking like the other people.  Would Multicam help you blend in where you live? If not, maybe you should spend your money on something else.”

Tac-TV – Glock Modifications

Some excellent advice from three great trainers (Ken Hackathorn, Larry Vickers, and Dave Harrington) about the necessary modifications for a Glock pistol.

Authorities’ new advice to schools: Confront shooter

An article explaining how strategies for dealing with an active shooter are adapting to current realities.  Interesting research cited.  From the article:

“In a study of 84 active shooter incidents between 2000 and 2012, Blair said the shooter ended the attack before police arrived in 25 cases: The shooter committed suicide in 21 cases; in four cases, the shooter fled.
In 16 of the 84 incidents, victims stopped the attack before police arrived, either by subduing the attacker —13 cases — or shooting the attacker in three cases.”

120 Tips on Strength Training for Women

Some enlightening observations from a man who specializes in improving women’s glute training.

Light Comparison

Good photos of how different flashlights illuminate a target at 25 yards.  Useful if you are shopping for a new light on your rifle.  His 200 lumen recommendation may be too much for a pistol used inside a house with white walls.  When you hit a wall with a very bright light, you can blind yourself.  If I was buying a pistol light, I’d look at something 100-150 lumens for most purposes.

The Three E’s: Exercise, Eat and Eliminate

One of my favorite fitness writers is Dan John.  He drops some knowledge bombs in this article!  If you are interested in more of Dan’s writing, a good place to start would be his book Never Let Go.

You’re a SEAL Stranded in Hostile Territory: What’s in Your Survival Kit?

A list of specs for each Navy SEAL’s personal survival kit.  It’s well thought out.  You would be hard pressed to find better advice about what to include in your kit.

Rangers: Against All Odds (Part 1)

An amazing account of a battle in Afghanistan.  Ambushes, snipers, counter-sniper, machine guns, and a denial of air support.  It’s long, but well worth the time to read it.
